No Viable Options by Craig Grimes
Set in 1992, No Viable Options is, in one way, a conventional mystery: bodies pile up and there is a love story of sorts. It is not surprising that the narrator is an aspiring writer, but, because of that, the story is also told with shifts in narrative voice. Along the way, we also see the narrator's journal entries, lists, dreams and various digressions. This method allows us an unusual insight into the life of an individual struggling with poverty, unexpected changes of drection in his life and disillusionment with political ideals. His life mirrors many of those around him. These are people struggling to survive and act ethically in a world where they have few or no viable options.
